GBP Soft Suspension vs Hard Suspension: How to Fix It
You wake up, check your Google Business Profile, and something is wrong. Either your listing has disappeared from Google Maps, or you can see it but you can not edit or manage it anymore. Calls have stopped. Revenue is dropping.
Before you do anything else, you need to answer one question: do you have a soft suspension or a hard suspension?
These are two very different situations with two very different recovery paths. Mixing them up is the most common reason business owners either delay their Suspension recovery or make things worse. This guide breaks down exactly what each one means, how to tell which one you have, what causes each type, and what steps to take to get your profile reinstated.
Soft Suspension: Your listing is still visible on Google, but you can no longer manage or edit it.
Hard Suspension: Your listing has been completely removed from Google Search and Maps.
Both can be recovered but the process is different for each.
GMB Guru has a 94% success rate recovering both types. Call (800) 743-1123 for a free consultation.
A soft suspension happens when Google flags your Business Profile as violating its guidelines but does not fully remove it. Your listing stays live on Google Search and Google Maps customers can still find it, see your reviews, and call you. However, you lose all management access. You cannot edit your hours, respond to reviews, post updates, or make any changes.
In your Google Business Profile dashboard, the profile will show a 'Suspended' or 'Unverified' label. But if you search for your business in a private browser window, it will still appear publicly.
• Your profile shows 'Suspended' in the GBP dashboard
• You can still see your listing when you search for your business name on Google
• Customers can still find and call your business
• You cannot make any edits to the profile
• Your reviews and photos are still visible
Soft suspensions are the most common type and the most recoverable if you act quickly and correctly.
A hard suspension is far more serious. Google has determined that your Business Profile violates its guidelines severely enough to remove it entirely. Your listing disappears from Google Search and Google Maps completely; it does not show up for any search, even your own business name.
In your GBP dashboard, the profile may be gone entirely, or it may show as suspended with no option to manage it. Customers who search for your business will find nothing, or will find a competitor instead.
• Your listing does not appear on Google Maps or Google Search
• Searching your exact business name in an incognito window shows no result
• The profile may be missing from your GBP dashboard entirely
• Your phone calls and website traffic from Google have dropped sharply
• Reviews may be hidden or inaccessible
A soft suspension that is not fixed quickly can escalate into a hard suspension.
Do not ignore a soft suspension or keep editing your profile trying to 'fix it' this can trigger a hard suspension.
How to Diagnose Which Type You Have (Takes 2 Minutes)Before doing anything else make sure you run this quick test:
1. Open a private or incognito browser window (so you are not logged into Google)
2. Search for your exact business name and city on Google Maps
3. Check the result:
Your listing appears publicly → You have a SOFT suspension. You can still be found but cannot manage the profile.
Your listing does NOT appear at all → You likely have a HARD suspension. The listing has been removed.
You are unsure → Log into your GBP dashboard. If it shows 'Suspended', check whether the listing is still visible publicly using the incognito test above.
Soft suspensions are recoverable, but you need to follow the right steps in the right order. Do not skip ahead.
The first instinct most business owners have is to log in and start making changes. Do not do this. Any edits you make to a suspended profile can reset the clock on your appeal or make things worse.
If an agency or manager on your profile had their Google account suspended, that can cause all profiles under that account to receive a soft suspension. Go to your GBP users list and remove any managers or agencies with account issues. Then submit your appeal.
Before submitting an appeal, review every field on your profile:
• Business name — does it match your real-world signage exactly, with no added keywords?
• Address — is it a real, staffed business address? No virtual offices or P.O. boxes?
• Phone number — is it a local number with a real area code, not a tracking number?
• Category — is it accurate and not misleading?
• Website — does it work and match the business on the profile?
Use Google's official Business Profile reinstatement form. Be clear, factual, and concise. Mention that you have reviewed your profile and corrected any issues. Do not submit multiple requests; one strong, well-prepared appeal is your best chance.
Even for soft suspensions, having documents ready can speed up the process:
• Business license or registration
• Utility bill at the business address matching your profile name
• Exterior photo of your storefront with visible signage
• Screenshot of your Google Business Profile showing the issue
Timeline: Most soft suspension appeals receive a response within 3 to 7 business days.
A hard suspension requires a more thorough approach. Google has determined that your listing violated its guidelines seriously enough to be fully removed. You only get a limited number of chances to appeal, so preparation is critical.
You only have one or two strong attempts at appealing a hard suspension.
Do not submit a rushed or incomplete appeal. A denied appeal is much harder to overturn.
If your first appeal was already denied, work with an expert before submitting again.
For a hard suspension appeal, documentation is everything. Prepare as many of the following as apply to your business:
For hard suspensions, use Google's Business Redressal Complaint Form rather than the standard reinstatement form. Include a clear explanation of your business, what you believe caused the suspension, what you have done to fix it, and attach your supporting documents.
Hard suspension reviews take longer typically 1 to 4 weeks. Do not submit another appeal while one is pending. If your appeal is denied, read the reason carefully before doing anything else.
If your appeal is denied, you can request a review through Google's Business Profile support or escalate via the Google Business Profile Help Community. At this stage, working with a professional service significantly improves your chances the appeal needs to be stronger and more thoroughly documented than the first attempt.
Whether you have a soft suspension or a hard suspension, getting it wrong can cost you weeks of revenue or make permanent removal more likely.
